The mega carnival of cricket, the Cricket World Cup kicked off on 30/05/19 with the first game played between England and South Africa. The first game of the 12th edition of the tournament saw hosts England beat South Africa by 104 runs here at the Oval ground on Thursday.
Winning the toss, South Africa's skipper Faf du Plessis decided to bowl first and got to a flying start after Imran Tahir dismissed Johnny Bairstow on the 2nd ball of the tournament. But then England started to build their innings. Ben Stokes hit 89 of 79 balls, captain Eoin Morgan scored 57 of 60 balls while Jason Roy hit 54 of 53 balls to help England post a total of 311/8 in 50 overs. Lungi Ngidi took 3 wickets while Imran tahir and Kagiso Rabada took 2 wickets each.
In reply, South Africa had a terrible start after they lost Aiden Markram and Faf du Plessis at the score of 44 runs. Then Quinton de Kock and Rassie Van der Dussen built a good partnership but after Kock's dismissal, South Africa never came back in the game and thus lost the match by 104 runs. Jofra Archer again impressed everyone by taking 3/27 in 7 overs while Liam Plunkett and Ben Stokes took 2-2 wickets each.
Ben Stokes of England was adjusted man of the match for his brilliant all-round performance.
